Vella’s journey began in 1971 with the acquisition of the Uva Halpewatte Tea Estate. Inspired by Ella’s natural beauty, the family expanded into leisure, achieving remarkable success. Building on this foundation, Vella further ventured into IT and established key strategic alliances. Today, Vella is a thriving conglomerate, celebrated for its award-winning ventures, enriching local communities, and creating lasting value for future generations.
Founded in 1971 by Mr. A. P. D. Abeyrathne, Vella Group began its journey with the acquisition of the Uva Halpewatte Tea Estate & Factory. Under his leadership, and with the involvement of his wife and three sons, the company focused on producing high-quality tea. This family-led venture set the foundation for future growth and diversification.
In 2012, Vella Group expanded into the leisure industry with the opening of 98 Acres Resort & Spa. Between 2012 and the present, Vella experienced significant growth, establishing Halpé Tea for exports, launching Flying Ravana Adventure Park, and introducing the exclusive Ravana Pool Club. Additionally, the group founded two boutique villas, Villa Lé Maas Tota and Walaa Kulu, as well as the Ella Swing and Amber Swing attractions.
Today, Vella Group is a dynamic conglomerate with over 10 companies spanning various sectors, including IT with 98 Solutions and strategic investments like Ceylon Escapade Partners (or Kiri Kōpi). The leadership team, which includes both family members and seasoned professionals, continues to drive the company forward. Despite its expansion, Vella remains true to its roots as a family business, dedicated to enriching local communities and showcasing Sri Lanka’s best to the world.
